Kiss, Marry or Kill: 42
A most substantial thriller, what is food noise, a focus on nail health, my favorite 2010-era feel-good TV series, and expanding the food dye convo
This is my weekly series for subscribers only, where I’ll share things that caught my eye this week in a fun and flirty way (kiss), a sustainable way (marry), or a not-so-good way (kill). And yes, this trendy game is technically “f***, marry, or kill” but we run a family-friendly-ish show around here.
Kiss (things I like right now)
Beneath Devil’s Bridge, by Loreth Anne White (← on Kindle Unlimited)
(TW: teen sexual abuse/violence) I am REALLY ON A ROLL with books right now. Could you classify this as a thriller? Technically, based on the literal gasp I gasped. But the book description truly doesn’t do it justice. When you say “thriller,” I think “double stuffed Oreo.” You devour it quickly, it provides an amplified yet fleeting reward, and you forget the title immediately. (The Lies She Told? The Last Lie? Last One to Lie? Liars Who Lie? I’ve certainly read all of them.) This is not that. This is sushi at Matsuhisa. Beneath Devil’s Bridge is richly constructed and perfectly paced, with characters that are often shockingly complex. And yes, there were unexpected turns of events, but the heartbreak I felt as my mind was reeling is what puts this book well above the average thriller—even the really good ones.
