When it's hard to live, laugh, love... it’s time for the Whole30
Five ways the January Whole30 can help you through a stressful season
Let’s be honest—it’s rough out there. The holidays are stressful enough, even without the added layer of the election. Buying gifts, traveling, hosting, cooking, and performing all the invisible labor to make everyone happy takes a physical and emotional toll. It’s no wonder nearly nine in ten adults say they find some aspect of the holidays stressful.
If it feels like so many things are out of your control right now—that’s because they are. (This is always true, but I’m feeling it more acutely this year.) Heading into the new year, many of us are feeling a need for grounding, stability, and shelter. You want to have agency over something; an anchor through the coming months. You need to care for your physical and mental health now so you can sail through January feeling strong, confident, and energetic.
You can’t change everything—but you can change your health, habits, and relationship with food in January. And this year, we need that more than ever.
“Amidst all the chaos of my mom going into the hospital, the Whole30 gave me the stability and functionality to keep going through long days. (The program) has made a huge impact on navigating this difficult time.” —September 2024 Cohort Alumni
Five common benefits of Whole30
In April 2020 (mid-pandemic) we ran an impromptu Group Whole30 due to overwhelming community demand. People said the Whole30 was the grounding force they were craving during an uncertain and tumultuous time. Not only did the Whole30 give them agency over something as foundational as their food choices, it provided them with innumerable physical benefits, a serious boost in mental health, and a much-needed sense of community.
This year, the January Whole30 can do all of that for you, too. Here are the top five benefits of the program, as reported by past Community Cohort participants:
1. Fewer cravings
In a recent survey, 94 percent of alumni said they successfully reduced their sugar cravings. Eating more protein and nutrient-dense foods, sleeping more deeply, improving blood sugar regulation, and better gut health all play a role in busting cravings.
2. Improved energy
For some, it’s like flipping a switch. For others, it’s a steady improvement in energy, focus, creativity, and capacity. This is one of the top three reported Whole30 benefits, and it carries over into every area of your life.
“This is the only program that has helped curb my cravings for sweets and improve my blood sugar. I struggled most of my life with emotional eating, until I started the Whole30. This program is amazing and has helped me in so many ways. I do (the Whole30) once a year, and recommend it to everyone!” —September 2024 Cohort Alumni
3. Better sleep
Deeper, easier, more restful sleep is an often under-valued Whole30 benefit. Imagine what a good night’s sleep would do for your mental health and capacity. Now imagine what 30 nights of better sleep would do!
4. Less bloating
Participants report a reduction in bloating and smoother digestion as their second most common non-scale victory. Comments include the following: “My clothes fit better,” “Meals no longer disrupt my day,” and “My stomach no longer hurts after eating.”
5. Goals beyond weight loss
We don’t track, facilitate, or encourage weight loss on the Whole30. However, we understand weight loss may be one of your goals coming into the program. Surveys show that 80% of alumni achieve most or all of their Whole30 goals—which translates to so many victories well beyond weight loss. (And 97% would recommend Whole30 to a friend—like you!)
“This was my seventh Whole30 (since 2017) and by far the most successful in helping me reach my food freedom. I no longer have intense sugar cravings, and have far less of an emotional relationship with food!” —September 2024 Cohort Alumni
