Welcome to the other side! For me, a skincare routine feels like an act of sober self-respect because I used to fall into bed without washing my face at night (drunk) and never had enough money or follow-through to do basic self-care. So I love it. Haven’t heard of Lather--maybe I’ll try!
Just picked up the shampoo at my local Arizona Lather and they were thrilled to hear that I was there on Melissa’s recommendation. Very friendly and helpful- offered to give me a sample of any of their products. Just nice to shop at a small place so interested in their customers. Excited to see how the shampoo works! Then I’ll try the skin care.
I used the Year of 49 to commit to a skin care routine and Vitamin C really is the bomb. I did microneedling but I was red for weeks and stopped. I fell off a bit but it just feels lovely and looks lovely to treat your face!
Your skin looks great. A good routine makes a huge difference. As a 61 year old, I suggest you don’t skip the neck for any of the products. It is a small area, your neck skin will sag, and you will wish you had done something to limit that sagging. And good for you for not washing your face in the morning. You haven’t gotten it dirty, and the toner will remove the little oil and pillow dirt that is there. Too much cleansing can be too harsh.
I know you mentioned not washing your face in the morning, and I used to do that as well. But I got a facial and she recommended doing a gentle cleanser in the AM (like CeraVe or the gentle one you got) BECAUSE the products you are using are doing the job of sluffing off the dead skin and you need to rinse that stuff off. Not sure if that's right for you, but something to research and consider.
For the same level of effort as the toner swipe, I like Garnier Micellar water. Does a good job with makeup removal too and definitely doesn't dry out the skin. Plus drugstore price point!
Your post is so timely! I just started a basic skincare routine after never really having one. I also was influenced by you and ordered an Iris & Romeo Best Skin Days pot (I don’t even know what it’s called, that’s how little I wear makeup!) and was wondering when you would apply that in your morning skincare routine. I know it’s technically makeup not skincare but I bought it specifically because it has SPF in it as well as the other reasons you recommend it. Right now I wash my face and then apply a light moisturizing cream. Would I wait for that to dry, then apply the Best Skin Days? Or no cream at all? Anyone can weigh in here! I will say that after starting my skincare routine, my face also feels great and looks glowy too! I’m loving it so far.
I LOVE THAT STUFF! I'd do it at the very end, as my SPF (with a bonus light coverage). You could either use a light moisturizer, allow that to sink in (5 minutes), then apply Best Skin Days, OR you could see if the hydrating ingredients in BSD would suffice in the morning without adding the extra moisturizer. (It depends on your skin type.) But yes, this goes at the END, as it's functioning as your sunscreen.
Your skin really is GLOWING in that after picture! Love this for you and definitely going to check out Lather when I start running out of my current brand products.
I'm still on the hunt! Some of my makeup products have built in SPF, but I need to try one of Lather's. (The drug store stuff I was using off and on doesn't feel good on my skin, maybe because it's so old.)

OOF, I love this so very much. What a beautiful act of self-care! XOXO

Oh interesting! I think the toner on a cotton round does a good job of that too, but that's a great point.

Thank you so much! This helps a lot. I can’t wait til it’s delivered!
And, you are definitely going to influence me to try LATHER as well! Thank you for these recommendations!
I have been searching for some product to commit to so thank you for the recommendation!
Happy to share! I really love the brand and how affordable it is, especially compared to some of the stuff I see promoted on TikTok!

Thank you! It feels amazing--I had no idea my skin was rough until I had something to compare it to.
Hi Melissa! Do you have a specific sunscreen you like for your face?
I'm still on the hunt! Some of my makeup products have built in SPF, but I need to try one of Lather's. (The drug store stuff I was using off and on doesn't feel good on my skin, maybe because it's so old.)
Try the Trader Joe’s Facial sunscreen! It’s the bomb! Goes on so smooth and silky!
Murad’s Protect and Correct is such good stuff.
Supergoop also has an excellent sunscreen.
I far prefer mineral sunscreens because I have super sensitive skin.
