Women learn to talk fast in order to stop interruptions from others, I believe. Filler words are speed bumps. My speaking style includes too many swear words, I know, and it makes me sound angry (and maybe I am angry). I'm trying to tone it down, thinking maybe the swear words are feeding my anger rather than letting it evaporate-through-venting. Anyway, how we talk and what we say matters. I'm all for digging down into the meanings and changing what doesn't work to provide a little fucking peace of mind (oooops).

I've written about filler words in the past. They're used against women far more than men, even though one UCLA study found that men use them MORE than women. It's sexist, for sure, and YES, they have their place. And also, yes, let's work on changing what doesn't work for us, even if that change is in response to a bullshit sexist system that unfairly penalizes women.

Research says that using curse words correctly is a sign of intelligence. If anything, my intelligence has grown if curse word usage is an indicator!!! But I hear you. Like I said above, my issue is using words (JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH!) that push the boundaries of polite conversation. As a member of the We Do Not Care club, eh… whatever. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I took a speech class in high school. We were deducted points every time we said “um” “like” or “you know.” It was brutal, but it cured me, and I’ve never looked back. Learning the pause really makes a big difference. My biggest speech issue in recent years is using too many sacrilegious exclamations! JESUS!! 😂😂😂

The approach of deducting points for filler words is VERY GEN X CODED. Like, we learned the most brutal way possible, all the time 😂
