I used to mostly run on trails and got in the habit of packing too light, even when hiking. It blew up in my face on a hike in the Smokys last September when I slipped on wet rocks and cut my knee open four miles from the car, and a 45-min drive from town. I didn’t have a first aid kit, but a kind gentleman who saw me wipe out did. Between his bandages and the buff I was wearing around my neck tied around my knee to help keep the bandages in place, I made it down very slowly. Ended up with 5 staples to close the cut. Long story short, I haven’t hiked without a small first aid kit since. I hope to never need it again, but maybe I can be a trail angel for someone else. All of these little things - lights, jackets, snacks, first aid kits, seem silly and onerous until shit happens. Which if you’re out in the wilderness long enough, it eventually will.

Ok, so I might be *slightly* biased 😂😂 but I feel pretty honored to see Kula Cloth on your list ❤️ AND I have to thank you for introducing me to the LMNT electrolytes. I’ve been drinking them for years now and the mint chocolate is my ‘go to’ hot drink for backpacking trips.

Love this!

Sorry to ask here Mellisa but I am a new subscriber and I can’t seem to find the place where I can ask a question that might be used in a future article? Many thanks, Claire

This list is perfect. It’s always better to be a little over prepared than under prepared and you never know when someone else out there (or with you) might need a few of these items.

The ONLY thing I would add would be a Pact Outdoors Bathroom Lite Kit for those times when nature calls and it’s solid rather than liquid. Especially great for backpacking, long day hikes, or early morning alpine starts when you leave before you normally need “to go”.
